The Ancient Civilisations and Empires (ACE) group has been formed to allow members to discuss what is known about ancient civilisations, their history, culture, allies and enemies. Details of the first meeting are at the bottom of this page.

Each meeting will concentrate on a particular civilisation and we will consider the factors that led to their rise, achievements and fall. The majority of civilisations to be discussed will have been established BCE.

The first people walked out of Africa 200,000 years ago and mankind has kept going ever since.

Along the way many great civilisations and empires have come and gone, all contributing to the people we are today.

Some of these will be very familiar to us, others less so, and the new 'Ancient Civilisations and Empires' group will meet monthly to discuss what is known about these ancient civilisations, their history, culture and enemies. Each meeting will concentrate on a particular civilisation and we will consider the factors that led to their rise, achievements and fall. The majority of civilisations to be discussed will have been established BCE.

We will agree a programme in advance, and as no one in the group has yet confessed to being an expert on the subject, we will each ‘take turns’ to do some research so we can lead the group discussions. 

Anyone who is daunted by the task will be supported, in advance and on the day, by other members of the group, and everyone will do some preparation of their own before each meeting so that we all have some familiarity with the forthcoming subject.  

Our venue can provide a TV which can be connected to a laptop for audio visual presentations. That said, for thousands of years people have shared knowledge without the use of IT, and if any group can manage that it should be us! So, if supporting materials are maps, handouts, drawings, puppets, or something else entirely, that will be just fine.  

We should have scope for some informative ‘outings’ to access relevant materials, and are hoping to build links with local museums and universities.
